Literacy

Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems and other written materials) to ignite their interest.

LD is made up of these aspects

• Comprehension
• Word Reading
• Writing

The very first thing we learn about in Literacy is stories.  We listen to them, we act them out, we talk about the characters, the settings and the story lines and all before we learn a single letter or write a single word.  The importance of these skills cannot be emphasised enough.  Parents have a very important role in this, where they can read and talk to their child at home everyday about stories, not only from books at bedtime but orally throughout the day.  Children should be exposed to as many stories and therefore words as possible as this will have a direct impact on their literacy skills later on in life.

Following on from this St Botolph's we have adopted the Read, Write Inc scheme that helps children to learn  to read and write.  This is slowly started in Nursery, when children are developmentally ready for that big next step and then continued into Reception.  To ensure consistency throughout EYFS and main school, we use the Read, Write Inc cards and associated pictures and phrases throughout.  Please see a list below of the letters, pictures and phrases your child will be using so that you can support them at home.
